Mightier Than the Waves

Life is like the ocean. The waves we can see are like the external struggles in our life that are tangible. Financial hardships, family problems, relationship troubles, or sickness, just to name a few. These waves keep coming throughout our entire lives. Sometimes the waves are so strong that they even force us under for a second, but then we come back up out of the waves and plant our feet in the sand again. And sometimes, one wave hits us so quickly after another one, that we barely have a chance to get our feet planted in the sand before we are knocked over again by yet another wave.

The undertow that pulls our feet deeper into the sand is like the internal struggles we face. These are the struggles that only we can feel and no one else knows they are happening to us only by looking at us. Sadness, loneliness, fear, shame, depression, unworthiness, and inadequacy, etc. These feelings are always pulling at us, trying to force us deeper and deeper into the sand until our feet get so stuck, that it takes strength to pull them out of the sand.

The waves that hit us in life are often painful and most times we do not understand why they are happening. But God created the ocean and He is mightier than the waves. He knows every wave that is coming towards us and He knows the undertows that we struggle with daily in our hearts. If we concentrate on looking at the waves coming towards us and the undertow pulling us down, it can seem scary. Our comfort is to always remember that as the waves are coming, God is always in control and we can trust Him. Keeping our eyes fixed on Him will help us get through the waves. When we look at the whole ocean overall, one wave coming towards us is nothing compared to the great depths and beauty of the ocean. One problem coming towards us is nothing compared to the beauty of the life God has given us. The horizon shows us the most beautiful part of the ocean - God’s wonderfully painted sunrises in the morning as we wake up, and beautiful sunsets at night before we go to sleep. Find beauty and strength in the sunrises and sunsets and not in the waves and undertows.

Journal Prompt - When have you felt the waves of life coming at you? How can you rest in God, knowing He is mightier than any wave that may come your way.
